Thyagaraya Nagar or T.Nagar was named after the then Justice party leader Sir Thyagaraya Chetty. It is known to be one of the oldest localities of Chennai that was set up in the early 1920s in the then Madras constituency of British India. It was primarily conceived as a residential locality, however, over 30-40 years it has developed into a shopping locality for people of Chennai with plenty of jewellery and textile showrooms. ConnectivityT.Nagar boasts of seamless connectivity to every part of the city through T.Nagar bus depot. Mambalam railway station is the closest suburban railway station that connects it to every area in the Chennai beach-Chengalpettu network. The major stops in this area are T.Nagar depot, Panagal Park, Pondy Bazaar, and Vani Mahal. There are around 35 bus routes on which buses operate from this depot. It is connected to West Mambalam through Duraiswamy subway. Real estateReal estate in T.nagar is well-established. As this area belongs to the old Chennai properties here cost between Rs 11, 500 per sq ft to Rs 13,000 per sq ft for apartments and plots. However, independent fully-constructed houses would cost more. There are a number of commercial properties that are coming up here, especially retails stores.
