Salt Lake City is a satellite city of Kolkata, located towards the northeast of the city. The areas development started around 1958 for accommodating the citys burgeoning population. Over the years, the area developed as a residential-cum-commercial neighbourhood. Because the area was developed on land reclaimed from saltwater lakes, it is called Salt Lake City. The areas official name is Bidhannagar, after the second chief minister of the state Bidhan Chandra Roy, who has been instrumental in the development of the area.
