So you have a couple of furry friends and you are a little concerned about their comfort when finding a new house. That’s natural as dogs and cats can’t adapt to all environments as comfortably as humans. Humans can always turn things in their surroundings to make it more comfortable, which animals can’t. All in all, a challenging environment does not make for a very comfortable canine habitat. So as a responsible pet owner, you must look for a pet-friendly locality, when finding a house.
This is more relevant in today’s crowded cityscapes where most families are confined to apartments or villaments that do not have much open spaces for pets. There might be many neighbours who do not love to have pets around.
Quiet Streets
You cannot be living with a pet by a busy street. Dogs are very sensitive to human presence. If the place overlooks a street where commuters and pedestrians are a constant presence in all normal and ungodly hours, then you better keep looking. One thing is for sure, a pet won’t like to live by an arterial road, and neither would you after sometime.
Big Yard
It is extremely important that your new house has a backyard of a considerable size. You have the sidewalks for taking your dog out for a walk, but you might not always have a dog park around the corner for them to play in. Your dog needs some running and jumping, some fetching and rolling and, if you have a spacious backyard, they can do all that stretching and exercising even when you are not around. This is a must-have, particularly if your dog is an energetic one.
If your yard happens to be small, or if you don’t have a yard at all, your pooch will have a horrible time. And invariably it will give you a horrible time venting its energy on all things around. So if you have to confine your canine indoors, go for a small breed.
Fence Enclosures
It is important to have a yard with a fence line. You don’t want your dog to escape out in the open and frighten people around. Look for a neighborhood where properties are fenced. If not, try to get one installed as soon as you move in, for the safety of your pets and those around. A fenceless yard can be an inviting opportunity for your dog to stray away when you are not watching.
Dog Flaps
Dog doors are indispensable in homes that host pets. Pets need to get in and out of the house and if you are not around to take them out, they might be stranded on either side. Look up and down the street to see how many houses have dog doors. If the majority of the houses in the locality do, then it is a perfect neighborhood for your pets.
Neighbours
If you want your pets to have friends in the new neighborhood you are moving into, visit the place around late afternoon to see how many people are out walking their dogs in the streets or how many homes have children playing with their pets in the garden. If there are many pets in the neighborhood, you will know by the sound of it. Visit the property with your dog and the neighbors’ pets will show themselves at once.
