A standard hot water system has a lifespan of 10 to 15 years, depending on whether it is electric or gas. Still, if you want it to work for such a long time, you simply need to have it maintained regularly. Conducting regular maintenance checks will always help you detect any issues as soon as they appear. And dealing with any issues instantly also means you won’t have to spend loads of money to fix the system once the problem becomes much bigger. But if you want to know exactly why you should have your hot water system checked out from time to time, make sure you keep reading.
Checking the Temperature Pressure Relief Valve
A temperature pressure relief valve, or a TPR is a part of your hot water tank that is responsible for maintaining the pressure inside of it. Once the pressure becomes too high, TPR automatically turns one and releases some of the pressure. That is why you should always make sure your TPR is working properly. Having a plumber check it out from time to time is the best way to make sure all the excess pressure gets released. One of the ways you can know your TPR isn’t working properly is that it never shuts down. This is the case because TPR is always supposed to turn off once the excess pressure has been released. If you notice this type of an issue, contacting a plumber ASAP is always recommended.
Checking the Sacrificial Anode
Every single hot water system relies on a sacrificial anode to work properly. It prevents rusting of your hot water tank, which is extremely important since just a tiny bit of rust can destroy the entire tank. For this reason, having a plumber check it out regularly is always a good idea. If your plumber thinks your sacrificial anode is getting worn out, you will also have to have this part replaced even if it hasn’t stopped working completely. This is the case because it’s always much better idea to replace a sacrificial anode before it stops working and potentially destroy the entire tank. Of course, replacing this part is a much cheaper thing to deal with than replacing the entire hot water tank.
Detecting Any Other Issues
Even though the above-mentioned issues are the most common ones, there are plenty of other things that can go wrong when it comes to hot water systems. That is why you plumber will check every single part in your hot water system, every time you have them do a regular maintenance check. Still, there are many issues that are hard to detect and which no plumber will be able to predict. So in case you notice that there is something wrong with your hot water system, make sure you contact an emergency plumber as fast as you can. Even if it turns out there was nothing wrong with it, having your hot water system checked means you will be able to sleep better at night.
Keeping all of these things in mind, doing regular maintenance checks seems like a real no-brainier. If you don’t have a plumber already, you should make sure you find a local one and schedule regular check-ups with them.
