Doesn’t matter if you are moving from huge property to smaller business premises or you are just moving to another location, you’ll definitely get to the moment when downsizing is in order. Sometimes you have to downsize not because you want to, but because the real estate market sucks.
Deciding what to keep with you and what to leave aside can be tricky. It’s not that easy to move from an office full of your stuff to a smaller space. Simply getting rid of your extra stuff won’t do the magic, if is a little more complicated.
As I mentioned above organising your staff and getting rid of the junk might not be easy, but here are the top 3 tips and tricks to help you make your office move smoother.
Take a close inventory of your belongings.
Now thing will get easier. Make three list: Must haves, can live withouts, I could replace.
Obviously the must have ones are your most needed stuff. Can live withouts are things you could easily sell or even donate. Said in other words if you leave them aside, when space becomes concern, they’ll be the first ones to go. Could replace list should be filled with things you can sell and then buy smaller ones in replacement. (work desk, office furniture, document keepers)
Think about how much storage space you’ll have at the new place
This bullet point is closely connected to the first one. When going through your inventory think about how much space you’ll have at your new business property. Make sure you have a good plan about ottomans that open up and have space inside, wall-mounted shelving, under-furniture storage boxes and similar stuff. Remember, when you are out of space and you still have important documents and stuff to keep you should think about creative ideas to store up instead of store out.
Aim to stay organised and be ruthless about what enters your office.
To make a future move out endeavour less stressful and much easier start organising your stuff in the office like you are going to move anytime soon. Trim your possessions down to the things you actually need and matter to you. After that adopt a fairly ruthless approach to what crosses the threshold of your business property. Make sure everything you bring in or order online is something you can store with the space you have. No matter how huge is your office it can turn into cluttered small business area in no time.
