Spillages and other types of staining can happen to the grout lines of your flooring – it is inevitable, apparently. It can happen from time to time. Little do most people know, small accidents such as the spilling of drinks can cause grouts to accrue stain. The good thing is, there are ways on how you can prevent stains from happening soon and there are also methods on how stains can be removed in case they already exist. Here is how:
Prevent it, so you will not need to replace it
No matter how much you think of it, prevention is always better than cure, right? Prevent the stains from happening in the first place and there are many ways on how to do it. Schedule a regular grout cleaning day and avoid being careless in handling food and other stuff that can contribute to staining. Also, use a tile sealer to protect the surface properly. Though you will not be able to prevent staining 100% of the time, you will still be able to attain the pleasant look of your flooring for a much longer time.
Keep ‘em clean!
Basic stuff, right? This is practical prevention method that you must employ regularly. If you spill something on your tile or grout, wipe it off immediately. If you notice dirt or stains, clean them out the first chance you get so they will not set in the grout. You do not need to do major cleaning of the grout every day, you just need to set a regular cleaning day for it and do not forego for tomorrow simple wiping or cleaning if spillages occur. A good rub would do.
Seal it early on
Never skip sealing the grout lines. This will add a layer of protection to the grout lines, giving it extra years in its life span. Use a quality grout sealer that can protect the grout from staining. Grout sealers come in two types – penetrating type as well as coating type. The coating type will add a thin layer of protection over the grout while the penetrating type can seep deep into the grout bringing its protection capability to a whole new level.
Hot Objects Away from Tiles, Please
Keep objects which are heated away from your tiles. If you place hot objects atop your tiles without any insulation or buffer, you can expect the heat to burn the grout. Once the grout is burned, dark brown stains may be found. Such stains are quite difficult if not impossible to remove since the grout itself is burned.
Protect the Grout by Using Placemats and Coasters for Food and Drinks
Your grout is prone to staining so you can help delay such staining by using placemats and coasters if your countertop is tiled. Since you will be using it when eating or preparing food, it would be best to use placemats and coasters to avoid any spillage. If you are using it to prepare food and drinks have a cutting board or placement board ready so you will not need to be in direct contact with the tiles and grouts.
