Everyone is aware of the major plumbing fixtures such as sinks, toilets, and bathtubs, but not many realize that these are not even the important fixtures. The vital features are often unseen yet play a vital role in ensuring the major fixtures are working correctly. Say you are a first time home owner and you are looking to update your bathroom, what are some of the features and fixtures to be on the lookout for, which will thus inform your new design?
1. Water Main Valve
This is the main shutoff valve for the entire house as it regulates all water flowing indoors. It is normally located in the crawlspace, basement or behind access panels and its primary purpose is to shut off all water supply within the home instantly. This is, in fact, the one valve whose location you should immediately establish soon as you move into a new home.
2. Fixtures’ Cutoff Valves
Ideally, each of the main fixtures will come with its own cutoff valve for instances where you would need to shut off water to a certain specific fixture. This means; supposed you have a faulty tap, you can easily control water flow thereby turning off that sink’s cut off valve without affecting water flow to other fixtures within the home.
3. Water Meters
These are used to show the health of your entire plumbing system. Primarily, water meters are meant to gauge your water usage allowing you to cut back if necessary. Modern meters are a bit more sophisticated, though, such that they may alert you if leaks are present in your system, some even showing the exact location of the leak.
4. Hot Water Valves
Hot water is a complete necessity in every home which particularly necessitates your knowledge of where the hot water valves are located. The purpose of the valve is to regulate the hot water coming into your home such that it is neither too hot to the point of scalding you while taking a shower, nor is it too cool to the point whereby you find yourself shivering while showering. You definitely don’t want these to go bad, as having no hot water will remind you how much you take it for granted.
5. Water Pressure Regulators
These are just as vital as the hot water valves in that you want the water pressure in your home to be just right. If it is too low, it might not get to all wet areas particularly those further away from the main water line entry point, and when too high it may lead to issues such as pipe leaks.
Understanding the plumbing system in your home is important even when you may don’t intend to undertake your own maintenance. You never know when you might need to dash to the main valve in a bid to control a burst pipe while waiting for the plumber to arrive. As seen from above, understanding your fixtures may not only prevent damage but also help you save cash if you happen to spot a leak in time.
