When I was in Dubai with my first job abroad, I had to get myself a studio apartment as rents there were ridiculously crazy. The studio was hardly 250 Sq. Ft and the space was a bit claustrophobic too. Fortunately, it had a window to an open space and I was given a sufficient relocation budget which I used for furnishing the place to my will. After some research and a talking with a few of my colleagues who lived in studio apartments, I was able to come up with some tips and tricks to make the small room appear bigger. Here I share some of them.
Remain clutter free
Japanese live in very small apartments and are known for minimalistic life style. When you take a look at their homes, though they are small, you won’t feel it lacks space. No matter whether your room is small or big, remove clutter and discard anything you haven’t used in the past 3 months. Not only does it make your room clutter-free and spacious, but it also makes your life simpler, organized and manageable.
Paint Walls White
I presently live in an apartment that is about 1800 Sq. ft. My parents too live in another apartment of similar size. However, my apartment looks comparatively smaller because its walls are painted light yellow, while my parents’ home have white walls. No other color has the pose, elegance and serenity like white. White walls reflect light and gives a sense of space and feeling of airiness. Moreover, it also makes the ceiling look taller.
Use Stripes to Elongate The Space
Striped rugs and carpets give a spacious look to the room. It makes the room look wider than it actually is. Moreover, bold stripes also act as a stunning accent piece taking the visitors’ eye off the lack of space.
Ideally, avoid using window covering for small rooms. However, it needn’t be practical for rooms with east-west facing windows. In such cases, opt for light colored horizontal or wooden blinds when the window is small. For larger windows, it is better to opt for curtains made of breezy fabrics. Also extend the curtain rod about a feet away from the windows so that drawn out curtains don’t block the view of the window.
Ever thought why you don’t feel claustrophobic inside a trial room? Simply because of the mirrors. Correctly placed mirrors can make a room appear double its real size. You can place it behind the couch or bed or opposite to the windows to brighten up the room.
Use Floor To Ceiling Storage
Floor to ceiling shelves not only give you ample storage space, but also make the room look taller. You could also arrange the stuffs color wise and leave some of the shelf spaces empty so that it doesn’t have a cramped look.
Use Sliding Door
Swinging doors mean wasted space, whereas sliding doors are sleek, space saving and modern. They open up to a room to make it feel pretty large too. From fabric to glass to steel, sliding doors are available in numerous materials and styles making it a versatile option for any interior.
Use Furniture With Clean Lines and Nothing Clunky
Furniture with intricate detailing is best suited for large rooms. In smaller rooms, it is best to opt for minimalistic approach. Simple furniture with clean lines not only look have a modern look, but are also easy to maintain.
Another tip is to buy furniture that shows its legs as ones covered with fabric usually look bulky and space consuming.
Make Use of Hidden Storage and Multi-Purpose Items
When space is lacking, opt for multi-purpose items like ottoman with storage space, end tables with drawers, mirror with iron board, sofa cum bed etc. Most of these incredibly modern furniture are a better alternative to traditional furniture in terms of functionality and style.
Use Colours in a Single Theme
For aesthetic reasons as well as for a spacious look, opt for a single theme color when choosing furniture and other accessories. While a bright bold accent piece gives a finished appearance to the room, it is otherwise better to opt for subdued tones for smaller rooms.
If you like to have a contrast, then painting the ceiling in a bright bold color to add a feeling of height to the room.
Combination of proper lighting, functional minimalistic furniture and clever storage can make any room look spacious and airy. It is all a matter of how you arrange and utilize space. If you like these tips or if you have any other tips that you would like to share, please let us know in comments.
