Go Green: 6 Tips For A More Efficient Home

Go Green Efficient Home

Go Green Efficient Home

Over the past year public interest in energy efficiency has skyrocketed, thanks in part to the media coverage of the climate crisis as well as the financial effects of the cost of living crisis. This has all pushed people to improve the energy efficiency of their homes to save the planet and cut down their utility bills at the same time.

If you want to get ‘green’ and improve your home’s efficiency, but don’t know where to start, worry not as we have collected 6 handy tips you can use to cut your utility bills and avoid wasting energy!

Cut Costs With Energy Efficient Lighting

Whenever you’re trying to improve your home’s energy efficiency, it’s usually a good call to start with your home’s lighting. Newer modern LED lightbulbs are much more efficient than old-style bulbs and will use notably less electricity. These modern LED bulbs also have a much longer lifespan than other bulbs, meaning they need to be replaced less frequently which will also save you money in the long term.

Increase Thermal Retention By Insulating Windows

In colder months, windows are a prime area for heat loss, as cold air from outside leaks through your windows and hot air leaks out. By installing some thermal blinds from DotcomBlinds.com will help insulate your home’s windows, which will improve the thermal retention of your home and reduce heat loss through your windows.

Ensure All Your Large Appliances Are Running Efficiently

If you don’t regularly maintain your home’s electric appliances like fridges and dishwashers, you could be making them less efficient and more costly to run. By ensuring that your appliances are in tip top condition will make them run much better, for example: defrosting your freezer twice a year or even simply cleaning your dishwasher regularly can make them run more efficiently and use less power to use.

Insulate Water Pipes To Fight Heat Loss

The pipes that carry warm water from your boiler to your radiators and taps could be making your home less efficient. As it gets colder, these pipes become an area ripe for heat loss as the cold air cools the water inside them. This can be rectified however by simply insulating these pipes with a foam jacket, to help insulate them and avoid heat loss.

Ditch Your Oven For More Efficient Appliances

While ovens are standard kitchen appliances, they’re not incredibly power efficient for what they do. Unless you’re cooking a large feast, most meals can be cooked in slow cookers, air fryers, or on the hob, all of these are more efficient ways to cook than using an oven, as they need to heat less space, they use a lot less power than a full oven would need to cook.

Be More Strategic When Doing Chores

Our final tip for how you can be more green at home is by making sure you do chores that involve appliances like washing machines or dishwashers with a bit more planning than usual. While running the dishwasher half full is fine when done occasionally, you’ll waste electricity by doing smaller loads of washing, so you should try to only wash full loads.

Common Program Areas Covered by NPDES Services

During the previous years, Individuals, industries, and cities were polluting many water sources by releasing pollutants into the water. These pollutants affected life in the waters in various ways, including the death of marine and freshwater animals.

common program areas covered by NPDES services
Photo by Ron Lach from Pexels

They also made the water unfit for human and animal use. To address this issue, the US government, through the Clean Water Act, created the NPDES permit program in 1972.

The permit program seeks to address water pollution through the regulation of the discharge of pollutants through point sources into any water body belonging to the United States. The NPDES services permit covers several program areas. They include;

Animal Feeding Operation (AFOs)

This program covers agricultural operations where livestock are kept in confined environments. Manure and wastewater from an AFO could contain pollutants, such as nitrogen and phosphorus, which could contaminate the water. The NPDES services permit regulating the discharge of pollutants from AFOs into any water body.

Stormwater

Stormwater is the water generated from rain and snow that flows over hard surfaces like roads, parking lots, and rooftops. This water usually picks up pollutants as it flows towards a water body, and the pollutants could contaminate the water body. Cities, construction sites, and industrial activities are the main sources of stormwater, hence are required to get NPDES services permit before they can discharge stormwater.

National Pretreatment Program

This is a program of the NPDES services established to protect water quality. The program aims to reduce the pollutants discharged by industries and other non-domestic facilities into municipal sewer systems and water bodies.

Industrial Wastewater

Most industries use water to clean their equipment or raw materials, and the wastewater usually contains pollutants affecting water quality. The NPDES services permit program puts certain limits and conditions for industries on how they can discharge wastewater into a water body.

Other industry-specific NPDES services permit programs include mining, oil and gas, pesticide applications, and vessel incidental discharges.

Municipal Wastewater

Municipalities are responsible for collecting and treating domestic sewage and wastewater generated by their residents. Most municipalities have wastewater treatment facilities that are used to treat wastewater before it is released into a water body.

The NPDES services permit program established the city’s limits and conditions to follow when discharging water from their wastewater treatment facilities to a water body.

Knowing All NPDES Program Areas

Knowing which program areas cover your activity is important before applying for an NPDES services permit. Other program areas covered by the NPDES services include aquaculture, pesticide permitting, and vessel discharges.

3 Things You Should Check Before Buying Linen Fabric

Linen Fabric

Linen Fabric

The linen fabric is made from flax fibers and it is considered one of the oldest fabrics in the world which is in use for a long time. Linen is commonly used in making clothing,  upholstery,  bedding, and other materials. Linen is very commonly used for making a variety of products and the main reason behind this is the unique filtering ability of linen that gives it moisture absorbing,  evaporating,  and ventilating abilities due to which it becomes resistant to bacteria. Due to these anti-allergic qualities and also due to the massaging effect of this fabric, linen is considered an ideal option for bedding.  Another important thing that you need to know is that linen has amazing properties like heat conductivity and air permeability properties, and due to these special properties linen can keep you cool in summers and warm in winters. It also absorbs 20% of moisture which means that it is an ideal option for people who sweat a lot, especially during the summer season.

Thread Count

The main thing that describes the quality of the linen is the thread count. Thread count is known as the number of threads woven per square inch In both directions. It is said that linen fabric has a higher thread count and it is considered a better fabric because a higher thread count indicates strength and durability. But you also need to know that higher that count would be somewhat expensive,  but you would never regret investing your money on something like this. If you find a bedsheet with hundred percent linen then it means that it has a higher thread count and will provide the maximum level of comfort but on the other hand in the case of a fabric having a blend of linen and cotton you want it to be much more comfortable but the later one would cost less.

Color

In case you are buying linen then another important consideration is the color of the fabric because it comes in a variety of different colors and you can choose between plain linen and printed linen fabric. Whenever you are picking or choosing the color of the fabric then always keep in mind the theme of your room or your house theme. The major advantage of this fabric is that it can be steamed, dry clean, and machine-washed also and for this reason, They are used in the room where the color does not fade so quickly. In addition to the color of the fabric don’t forget to consider softness also otherwise you would be uncomfortable.

Weight And Size

Linen fabric is manufactured in many different sizes and weights. Generally, the width of the fabric is done in inches and normally it ranges from 54 inches to 124 inches. In addition to this, the weight generally starts from around 3 Oz to 14 Oz. The size and weight of this fabric are entirely dependent on its use. For example, the size and weight vary for use over the mattress, below, or as a bedsheet. When it comes to the cost of this fabric then it is also important to think so in this case it is always recommended to do your research before buying anything like this for yourself.

Should You Invest In Farmland?

farmland

The agriculture industry encompasses everything from caring for crops to cultivating soil. If it can be found at your local grocer’s produce section, then most likely it came from a farm. In addition to fruits and vegetables, farmers can also raise animals to provide products such as leather from cattle and wool from sheep. Just the definition of a farm can widely vary. Think of how different a salmon farm is from a tobacco field or an orange orchard from a cranberry bog. They have numerous differences but are all considered part of the agriculture industry.

Investing in agriculture can help out farmers in many ways. In some instances, you’re supporting working families and their business that has been passed down for generations. Additionally, your investment can help some local farmers diversify and expand on what they can provide. For other farmers, additional funding can allow them to pursue sustainable farming where they can provide resources to the current population while protecting the environment. Investing in agriculture can even help new farmers, especially women and people of color, to get started.

The world’s population continues to grow everyday. However, as the numbers increase, so does the demand for food. It’s left to the agricultural industry to answer to this need. Researchers estimate that if two billion people are born in the next three decades, food production has to increase by 70% to meet the demand for food. The output is incredible. Agriculture is great for investing. It can not only benefit your bank account, but also greatly aid farmers and make a positive global impact. To learn more on why investing in farmland can be profitable, look over the infographic below.

How to Assemble the Best Log Cabin Home Kits Perfectly

You’ve always wanted your own little wooden home in the woods – finally you can. Log cabin kits are making it possible for people all around the world to build and own their own little wooden dream.

Gone are the days where you must go into the forest, chop down a tree and cut down stumps to the desired lengths. The hard work has already been done by manufacturers compiling different sized and shaped log homes. All you have to do is get the pieces together and start building.

Choosing from a variety of styles, homeowners can buy different kinds of log homes complete with windows, doors, beams, and posts. Learn more about how log cabin kits work here: https://home.howstuffworks.com/home-improvement/construction/planning/log-cabin-kits.htm

What’s Included in a Wood Cabin Kit?

Apart from laying down a foundation, most kits have everything else you might need. It’s like building a puzzle on a very big scale. Manufacturers of these fully equipped wooden homes have a variety of different architectural designs available. Ranging from 1-3 bedrooms, 1-3 bathroom, living area, patio, and even double story.

Depending on what design you choose, you’ll receive different parts to assemble. Kits typically include:

  • Log walls
  • Flooring panels
  • Roof parts
  • Windows frames and windows
  • Door frames and doors
  • Insulation equipment

It’s important to note that some kits don’t include other parts like material to lay the foundation, interior finishing, plumbing, electrical cables, heating systems, and insulation systems.

Although the kit does make life much easier, you are still required to get all of the other things in place. Luckily, you can use craftsmen to recommend extra materials and even help with the assembly bit.

If you’d like to assemble your own kit, you will have to follow these steps:

Lay foundation

It’s important that you find a location that is most practical for your wooden home. A great foundation is solid and always poured under the frost line. It will be the base of the entire structure and needs to be solid, durable, and perfectly aligned.

Wood Type

There are different types of wood that you can use but the best log cabin kits are handcrafted from scratch. In order for your new timber palace to look unique and reflect your own personal style, you can opt for kits that feature special hand treated and crafted posts and poles.

When deciding on the wood type, you shouldn’t only consider what it physically looks like but also, it’s functionality and practicality. Wood can expand and shrink depending on the weather conditions in the area.

Consult your local log kit provider when it comes to types of logs. You should also consider a wood that is durable and that can endure harsh weather circumstances.

Installing

After you’ve laid down a solid foundation, you can start to position the logs according the instructions. All log cabin kits come with an in-depth instruction manual that you can follow. High quality kits are very convenient and easy to install. With a little bit of manpower and a crane or ladder, you’ll be able to install the construction yourself. Watch this video of a construction site of a big wooden cabin.

Joists need to be placed and then the flooring should be directed in a horizontal position to the joists. Logs are heavy and trying to lift and adjoin them by yourself will be impossible. Remember to wear the correct safety gear when lifting and joining logs.

Once the walls are built, the roof will go on almost immediately to ensure everything is kept safe and dry. Heavy rafters can be used to frame the roof or metal. When the frame is put in place you can add doors and windows. Always make sure that windows are installed in the correct direction. Regardless, most kits include double sealed and glazed units.

If installing your own log cabin kit sounds like too much hassle, you can request assistance from the company you’ve purchased it from.

After the entire structure has been erected all that is left is to get insurance that covers all interior items as well as fire and weather damage. Decorate the inside with complimentary furniture and décor and enjoy your new natural home.

Will Solar Panels Help Sell My House Faster?

Should you Install Solar Panels?

solar panelsMore homes have solar panels today than ever before. They can save the average household between $10,000 and $30,000 over the lifetime of the system. Along with being cost-effective, they are also good for the environment. They don’t consume fossil fuels and do not require water to operate. Set them up, collect free sunlight, and you have energy to run your home.

The value of a feature on any home will rely heavily on the buyer’s perspective. Not everyone is aware of the benefits of renewable energy. Others may be concerned about complications related to using what they view as a non-traditional power system Continue reading →

Why Purchasing A New Home With Green Add-ons Or Energy-efficient Features Is Beneficial

Home-With-Green-Add-ons-Or-Energy-efficient

When you hear the term “green home,” does a green-colored house come to mind? Or perhaps, a house out in the bush with lots of greenery in the yard? For some it does, but that’s not what it means. A green home is an eco-friendly house. That’s a house constructed to save energy and water, as well as recycle anything that can be recycled.

Why you should buy or build a green home

– It’s the future!

Ecological homes are in vogue. Many governments are adopting policies that favor preserving the environment and including them in their laws on house construction.

Home builders are also more aware of climate change as well. So more and more green homes are coming up with the old ways of house construction being left behind.

– It’s great for your wallet

Apart from caring for the environment, building or buying a green home makes financial sense because it has greater value than that of regular houses.

Ecological houses run on energy-efficient appliances and are built to save electricity in every way possible, which translates to lots of savings for the homeowners in the long run.

Building a green home also includes the use of recycled material which often costs less, and in that way, more money is saved.  For example, you can use recycled material to fence the home or build long-lasting furniture. Green homes save the environment by cutting down on waste.

– The benefits extend to your garden

Eco-homes incorporate green landscaping in their design.  Green landscaping is where you plant flora in your garden that will help you save money, energy, and time. These plants should also reduce waste and pollution in your home.

A great way to incorporate green landscaping into your home is by growing plants that are native to your area. Native plants take less water, energy, and time to maintain and will flourish, adding to the beauty of your home. The trick is to avoid invasive native plants that will choke out other plants and destroy the greenery of the area.

You can also use plants to shade your home and cut down on house cooling costs. Just plant deciduous trees on the side of the home that gets the most sun. In places that do not get a lot of water, planting drought-resistant plants is another great way to cut down on water use.

Turn your home into a green home

For people that already own a home, you don’t have to sell or move to go green, you can renovate your house and turn it into an energy-saving home. It’s a gradual process that will upgrade your home, add its value, as well as allow you to do your part to preserve the environment.

Ways you can make your house ecologically friendly

–  Turn to energy-efficient appliances

Many old appliances, such as clothes dryers, washers and fridges, consume a lot of power and are not environmentally-friendly. So, start by replacing all older appliances in your house with modern appliances that are energy star certified.

There are other benefits to these. For example, some states or localities give rebates for recycling and buying energy-efficient appliances.

A simple move like replacing your incandescent bulbs with energy-saving LED  bulbs does not take much.

You can also save energy by insulating your home. That will ensure no heat is lost from the house cutting down on heating costs. A home building expert can help you insulate your home by using foam spraying insulation or installing energy-efficient windows.

– Shift to water-efficient home appliances

You can also purchase appliances that cut down on water use. For example, some washing machines are made to use less water.

Installing a water recycling plant in your plumbing can ensure no water is wasted from the home and any recycled water can be used to irrigate your garden

–  Use ecological fuel source

It’s also time to move from fossil fuel energy to green energy. That means shifting to fuel sources that do not destroy the earth when being produced and also do not release harmful emissions into the environment. Here, there are many options but one that stands out is solar energy.

The sun is always there, and it’s a great source of free energy. Solar panels can help heat your water and your home and even offer an extra option for electricity. If you generate surplus electricity from your solar panels, you can also sell it to power companies in some areas.

The bottom line

When all is said and done, the issue of climate change can no longer be ignored. Investing in a green home now will save you from spending more than you should on one in the future. If you already own a house, it’s a good idea to start turning to green solutions and appliances. At the very least, it will add value to your home, and at best, you will be doing your part to preserve the environment.

Benefits of Using Green Energy for Your Home

Green energy becomes more popular and affordable every year but installing a renewable energy system in your home is still a big decision. You may be unsure if switching to renewable energy is worth the cost and effort. However, there are many advantages to equipping your home with clean energy. Here are five ways you can benefit from using green or renewable energy in your home:

Ultimate Guide To How A Solar System Produces Energy

Solar power is a clean and most reliable source of renewable energy. This is used in various forms to power Bakersfield homes and businesses. Solar photovoltaic panels convert the sun’s rays into electricity through exciting electrons in silicon cells that use the sun’s light photons. The electricity produced is the renewable energy for use in your home or business. To understand this better, here’s an ultimate guide to how a solar system produces energy.

Roof solar system

The solar panels in most solar systems are mounted on the roof. This requires a professional installer finding an ideal site with no shade on the panels especially in periods of prime sunlight between 9 am to 3 pm. This explains why most solar systems are usually facing south for the optimum potential of your system. However, the installer can choose another orientation that promises sufficient production. This is done with consideration of trees or other items that might cause shading during the day. Shading might cause a considerable decrease in energy production. Continue reading →
